Puerto Rico defended the Centrobasket title.

Florida Intern.) and his teammates outplayed Dominican Republic
80-89 in the Big Final in Santo Domingo. Both teams booked a spot for
the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship (Pre-Olympic) and the Pan-American
Games in Guadalajara.
Carlos Arroyo once again was the leading player in Puerto Rico as he
collected 23 points and 5 assists.
Jose Juan Barea (181-G-84, college:
Northeastern) scored 16 points,
David Cortez
(190-G/F-81) had 14, while
Peter John Ramos (222-C-85) helped with 12 pts. For the hosts of
2010 Centrobasket,
Charlie Villanueva (209-F-84, college:
Connecticut) exploded with 36 points and 11 rebounds. He made seven
triples in this game.
Jack Michael Martinez (203-F/C-81, agency:
Paris Global Sports) (8 rebs, 5 as) and
Elpidio Fortuna (186-G-85) added 10 points each. Last quarter was
the crucial one in this meeting. Before that, Dominican Republic opened
the game with decent 23-19 lead.
Charlie Villanueva was on fire and mostly owing to him Dominicans
made 24-20 in the second quarter for nice 47-39 lead at the half time.
Puerto Rico finally improved after the breather.
Carlos Arroyo stepped up for his team leading it to 17-24 in Q3. It
means that Puerto Rico cut the margin to just one point before the last
ten minutes and everything was open again. Puerto Rico played great when
it was the most important and smashed Dominicans in the last quarter
16-26 for the final 80-89 victory and another Centrobasket title.
Third place
Cuba - Panama
74-75
Panama grabbed the Bronze in Santo Domingo thanks to 74-75 thriller win
against Cuba. With this victory Panama secured a spot for the
Pan-American Games in Mexico next summer. Both teams booked a ticket for
the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship (Pre-Olympic).
Jose Lloreda
(201-F/C-80, college:

shined for Panama in this game with double-double of 24 points and 12
rebounds. He was the MVP with valuation 22.
Joel Munoz (179-G-80) secured a nice help with 18 points, while
Leonardo Pomare (203-F-86, college:
San Diego) added 10 points and 11 boards. In Cuba,
Orestes Torres (202-C-87) collected 16 points, 7 boards and 6
assists.
Andy Boffil (192-G/F-82) had 15 and
Allen Jemmott (195-G/F-80) scored 11 pts. Panama opened the game
better.
Jose Lloreda and his teammates dominated in the first ten minutes
for 17-23 lead. Cuba drastically improved after that and limited
Panamanians to just 12 points in Q2. On the other side, Cubans scored 19
for 36-35 turn at the half time. Panama replied after the breather and
quickly grabbed back the lead. After 19-25 in third period Panama was 5
points up and there was ten minutes left in the game. Last quarter
belonged to Cuba (19-15), but that was not enough. Panama was more
concentrated in the finish to grab 74-75 victory and the Bronze in Santo
Domingo.
Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico to meet
in the Finals - Jul. 11, 2010
Dominican Republic - Cuba
85-71
Dominican Republic stays unbeaten in Santo Domingo. This time Dominicans
outplayed Cuba 85-71 advancing to Centrobasket Finals, where they will
take on Puerto Rico. On the other side, Cuba will fight against Panama
for third place.
Franklin Western (200-F-72, college:
Providence) led the way for Dominicans with 16 points.
Kelvin Pena (193-G-81, college:
Southeastern CC) had 14 points and 6 assists, while
Elpidio Fortuna (186-G-85) added 13 points and 5 assists.
Elys Guzman (206-F/C-82, college:
Bemidji St.) had double-double of 10 points and 11 boards. In the
loosing squad,
Yoan Luis Haiti (200-C-82) collected 14 points and 5 rebounds.
Lisvan Valdez (194-G/F-88) scored 13 pts. Third quarter was the
crucial one in this game. Before that, Dominican Republic made two-point
lead in the first half (17-12 Q1, 22-22 Q2). After the breather
Dominican totally took control on their rivals. They exploded at the
both sides of the court scoring 29 points in offense and at the same
time limiting Cuba to just 10 points for 10 minutes. It means that
Dominicans were up by 21 with one quarter to go. Cuba won the last ten
minutes 17-24, but they needed a way more. Dominicans will meet powerful
Puerto Rico in the Big Final, while Cuba and Panama will play few hours
before that game. Both matches are scheduled for Monday.
Puerto Rico - Panama
77-70
Puerto Rico advanced to Centrobasket Finals after they beat Panama 77-70
in the Semis. So after a bad start and defeat in their first appearance,
Puerto Ricans managed to beat all their rivals. Panama, who failed in
this game, will meet Cuba in the battle for third place.

period and closed the gap to 39-34 until the half time. Panama was still
on high level in Q3 as they finished it with 20-23 and everything was
open again. Puerto Rico had to work very hard until the end in order to
finish the last period with 18-13 and to reach the Centrobasket Finals.
The Big Final is scheduled for Monday, as well as the game for third
place.

Group A
U.S. Virgin Islands - Dominican Republic
88-98
Dominicans ended Preliminary Round with perfect 4-0 and of course
advanced to Semifinals in Santo Domingo. This time the host of this
event managed to beat the U.S. Virgin Islands 88-98. The ISV finished as
the last ranked team in Group A with just one win.
Jack Michael Martinez (203-F/C-81, agency:
Paris Global Sports) and
Elpidio Fortuna (186-G-85) led the scorers in victory with 21 points
each. Martinez pulled down 9 rebounds beside that.
Charlie Villanueva (209-F-84, college:
Connecticut) also was great in this win as he added 20 points and 13
boards. In the loosing squad,
Walter Hodge (183-G-86, college:
Florida) collected 26 points and 6 assists.
Aaron Brown (193-G-92) followed him with 20 pts and 5 boards. First
quarter was pretty leveled, but still Dominicans won it by one (20-21).
Walter Hodge and his teammates shined in the second period scoring
23 points against the strong Dominicans. At the same time, the hosts had
21 meaning that the ISV was 43-42 up at the half time and was looking
good. Teams exchanged baskets after the breather, what resulted with
18-18 in Q3 and everything was still open. However, Dominicans had great
last period as they drained impressive 38 points for ten minutes, while
limiting ISV to 27 on the other side. It was enough for 88-98 win and
perfect 4-0 in Preliminary Round. In the Semifinals, Dominican Republic
will play against Cuba. Dominicans already secured a ticket for the 2011
FIBA Americas Championship.
Panama - Jamaica
55-51
Panama was too strong for Jamaica in the crucial game for Semifinals in
Santo Domingo. Both teams ended Preliminary Round with 2-2 record in
Group A, but thanks to this victory Panama grabbed the second place and
advanced to Semifinals. Jamaica ended as No.3.

at the half time. Panama improved after the breather, especially in
offense. Panamanians started to make shots scoring 19 points in Q3. They
limited Jamaica to 14 on the other side for 39-38 turn before the last
ten minutes. Jamaica tried to take back the lead and to win this one,
but Panama stopped them on their way finishing Q4 with 16-13 for the
final 55-51 victory. Panama will meet Puerto Rico in the Semifinals.
They already booked a spot for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship.
Group B
Cuba - Trinidad and Tobago
90-60
Cuba destroyed Trinidad and Tobago 90-60 in the last day of the
Preliminary Round in Santo Domingo. With this victory Cuba jumped to
second place in Group A and advanced to Semifinals. Trinidad and Tobago
ended as the last ranked team in this group with just one win in four
games.
Allen Jemmott (195-G/F-80) was the leading player in victory with 24
points.
Orestes Torres (202-C-87) had 15 points and 7 boards, while
Yudniel Perez (189-G-84) added 13 pts.
Andy Boffil (192-G/F-82) helped his team with 12 points. In defeat,
Ian Young (191-G-81, agency:

Auburn) top-scored with 18 points.
Joel Haywood (186-G-84) collected 13 points and 7 boards. Cuba
smashed Trinidad and Tobago in the first period.
Allen Jemmott and his teammates were unstoppable in offense scoring
27 points, while their rivals stopped on just 11. It was a clear signal
that Cuba will take this one in style. The Cubans ended second frame
with 25-20 meaning that they were 21 points up at the half time.
Trinidad and Tobago was not able to resist in the second half as well.
Cuba ended Q3 with 20-19 and Q4 with 18-11 for the final 90-60 victory.
Cuba will meet Dominican Republic in the Semifinals. Cuba also already
booked a spot for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship (Pre-Olympic).
Belize - Puerto Rico
88-96
After loss in their first appearance in Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico
managed to register three straight wins and to finish Preliminary Round
as No.1 in Group B. This time Puerto Ricans outplayed Belize 88-96.
Belize (2-2) on the other side ended this stage as No.4 and failed to
reach the Semis.

the half time. It was the crucial game for both teams and they gave 100%
to take this one. Puerto Ricans were slightly better in Q3 scoring 24,
while Belize had 22 points in this frame. It means that PUR was 9 points
up before the last ten minutes, what turned out as unreachable for
Belize.
Milton Palacio led his team to 28-27 in the last quarter, but that
was not enough for any better than 88-96 defeat. Puerto Rico will meet
Panama in the Semifinals. Also, the Puerto Ricans already booked a spot
for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship (Pre-Olympic).
Day Four in Santo Domingo - Jul. 9, 2010
Group A
Dominican Republic - British Virgin
Islands
85-47
Dominican Republic blasted British Virgin Islands for perfect 3-0 record
in Group A. With this win the Dominicans already booked a spot for the
Semifinals. At the same time, IVB faced with elimination as they
registered just one win in four appearances.

the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Jamaica - U.S. Virgin Islands

Jamaica made a big step forward to Semifinals in Santo Domingo.
Jamaicans were better than the U.S. Virgin Islands 71-65 jumping to 2-1
in Preliminary Group A. On the other side, ISV dropped to 1-2.

Puerto Rico - Cuba

Puerto Rico registered second straight win in Santo Domingo. This time
Puerto Ricans outplayed Cuba 73-51 for 2-1 record in Group B.

had nice third period (20-14) jumping to comfortable 13-point lead after
it. There was ten minutes to go and question about the winner was
already resolved. Puerto Rico was in control finishing Q4 with 21-12 for
22-point win at the end. In the last day of Preliminary Round, Puerto
Rico will play against Belize. Cuba will meet Trinidad and Tobago.
Trinidad and Tobago - Mexico
52-75
Mexico registered second win in Santo Domingo and finished the
Preliminary Round with 2-2 record. It means that Mexicans will have to
wait for all Saturday's games to end in order to find out will they
advance to Semifinals or not. At the same time, Trinidad and Tobago
dropped to 1-2 in the same group (B).
Victor Mariscal (198-F-72) stepped up for Mexico with 21 points and
7 rebounds. He reached valuation 24 and was the MVP of this meeting.
Jovan Harris (191-G/F-81, college:
USF)
netted 15 points in this win. Trinidad and Tobago had only two players
with double-digits in scoring.
Maurice Joseph (193-G-85) and
Wilfred Benjamin (201-F/C-84, college:

first quarter with 12-25. It was a clear sign who will take this game.
Second period belonged to Mexicans as well (14-17), who were 16 points

British Virgin Islands - Jamaica

Jamaica had a joyful Day Three in Santo Domingo. After defeat against
the hosts in Day Two, Jamaica managed to beat the British Virgin Islands
56-71 for 1-1 record in Preliminary Group A. On the other side, IVB
dropped to 1-2.

Jamaica will meet the U.S. Virgin Islands. IVB will play against
Dominican Republic.
U.S. Virgin Islands - Panama

The U.S. Virgins Islands outplayed Panama 82-74 for the first win in
Santo Domingo. It was the second appearance for the ISV, who now has 1-1
score in Preliminary Group A. Panamanians dropped to 1-2 (same as
British Virgins Islands).

in Santo Domingo. In Day Four, the U.S. Virgin Islands will meet Jamaica
and it will probably be the crucial game for both teams. Panama will
have a day-off.

Cuba - Belize
78-94
Second win for Belize in Santo Domingo. With this victory Belize jumped
on top of the Preliminary Group B with 2-1 record. At the same time,
Cuba dropped to 1-1 in the same pool.

points and 10 rebounds.
Richard Troyer (196-F-84, college:
Utah Valley St.) also was great adding 21 pts and 10 boards.

Mexico - Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico grabbed the first win in Santo Domingo for 1-1 score in
Preliminary Group B. Puerto Ricans faced with OT loss against Trinidad
and Tobago in their first appearance, but they quickly recovered from it
and managed to grab the first win at 2010 Centrobasket. On the other
side, Mexico faced with the second loss at this event (1-2).
Peter John Ramos (222-C-85) paced Puerto Rico to win collecting 16
points and 9 rebounds.

after the breather and Puerto Rico finished Q3 with 22-27 for excellent
20-point lead before the last ten minutes. The game winner was already
known at that time and Puero Rico slowed down, what Mexico used to cut
the margin to 13 pts. In Day Four, Puerto Rico will play against Cuba.
Mexico will meet Trinidad and Tobago.
Centrobasket continues today - Jul.
8, 2010
The
2010 Centrobasket Championship for Men continues today with the game
between British Virgin Islands and Jamaica at 3:30 pm. FIBA-Americas
Secretary General, Mr. Alberto Garcia, said that the game will serve as
a test to see if the improvements done have solved the problems in the
coliseum.
Many portable air conditioner unites and a blower have been installed in
Palacio de los Deportes Virgilio Travieso Soto. Also some practices have
been held.
'We are going to celebrate the first game because the tests done at the
practices are not enough. If the problems continue we will cancel the
event,' said Garcia.
The lack of air conditioning and leaks in the first couple of days
forced some of the games to be stopped.
If the schedule continues as planned, then Cuba faces Belize at 6:00 pm
and Puerto Rico finishes against Mexico at 8:30.

Centrobasket Tournament has been suspended - Jul.

Day
3 of the 2010 Centrobasket Championship has been suspended after
celebrating the first game between the US Virgin Islands and Panama,
which was stopped many times, after seeing the poor conditions on the
court.
The lack of air conditional and leaks from the roof of Palacio de los
Deportes Virgilio Travieso Soto in the Dominican Republic have been
consistent since day one and FIBA-Americas decided to suspend the rest
of the games and ordered to correct everything inmediately.
In the last couple of hours a total of four portable air conditioning
units have been installed.
Tonight at 10:00 pm a FIBA-Americas Evaluation Committee will see the
imrpovements and decide to continue or cancel the tournament.
In the only game held today, US Virgin Islands defeated Panama 82-74.
If the tournament continues the games suspended today will be played
tomorrow starting at 3:30 pm with the game between British Virgin
Islands and Jamaica. Then at 6:00 pm Cuba plays Belize and at 8:30
Puerto Rico faces Mexico.

Dominican Republic was too strong for Jamaica in Day Two of the
Centrobasket Championship 2010. It means that Dominicans stay alone on
top of Preliminary Group A with perfect 2-0 record. On the other side,
it was the first appearance for Jamaica in Santo Domingo.

Dominican Republic was a better team in the first quarter as they
finished it with 4-point lead, 17-21. However, Jamaica drastically
improved in the second period, especially in defense.
Roy Hibbert and his teammates limited Dominicans to just 11 points
for ten minutes, while they drained 22 on the other side. It means that
Jamaica was 7-points up at the half time and was looking good. However,
Dominicans replied with 11-15 after the breather and everything was open
again. The hosts of this event exploded in the last qarter (12-21) for
the final 62-68 win and perfect 2-0 in Group A. Dominicans will have a
day off, while Jamaica will meet the British Virgin Islands on Wednesday
(Day Three).
Panama - British Virgin Islands
75-61
Panama grabbed the first win in Santo Domingo. After 63-56 loss in Day
One against Dominican Republic, Panamanians managed to beat the British
Virgins Islands with comfortable 75-61. It means that both teams now
have 1-1 record in Preliminary Group A.

rebounds.

McNeese St.) stopped on 10. Panama opened the game in style making
nice 27-18 lead in the first ten minutes. IVB players woke up after that
and were slightly better in Q2 (16-19) closing the gap to 43-37 until
the half time. Both teams struggled offensively in third period, but
still it was Panama who ended it 12-10. IVB had to improve drastically,
but they simply were not able to do it. Panama played another nice
period (20-14) for the final 75-61 victory. In Day Three, Panama will
meet the U.S. Virgins Islands. IVB will meet Jamaica.
Group B
Belize - Mexico
53-85
After defeat in Day One against Cuba, Mexico blasted Belize in Santo
Domingo for 1-1 record in Preliminary Group B. The loosing squad has the
same numbers now. They were too strong for Trinidad and Tobago in Day
One.
Omar Quintero (183-G-81, college:
S.Nazarene) and
Jovan Harris (191-G/F-81, college:
USF)
were the leading scorers in Mexico on Tuesday evening with 19 points
each. Quintero had 8 rebounds beside that, while Harris dished out 7
assists.
Michael Strobbe (201-F-85) and
Pedro Meza (187-G-85, college:
Arizona W. CC) helped with 12 and 11 points respectively. On the
other side, Belize had only one player with double-digits in scoring. It
was
Milton Palacio (190-G-78, college:
Colorado St.) with 15 points (6 rebs). Third quarter was the crucial
one in this match. Before that, Belize opened the game better making
15-12 lead in the first ten minutes. Mexico replied with 17-21 in Q2 for
32-33 turn at the half time. Than,
Omar Quintero and his teammates exploded draining impressive 27
points in third quarter, while they managed to stop Belize to just 12.
Mexico was looking good at that time having comfortable 16-point lead.
Belize was not able to reply and Mexico finished last quarter with 19-25
for the final 63-85 victory. Mexico will meet Puerto Rico in Day Three.
Belize will take on Cuba.
Puerto Rico - Trinidad and Tobago
91-97 OT
Trinidad and Tobago registered the first win in Santo Domingo. They
failed against Belize in Day One, but after that surprised Puerto Rico
beating them 91-97 in overtime. It means that Trinidad and Tobago have
1-1 now in Preliminary Group A, while Puerto Rico is on 0-1 as this game
was their first one at this event.
Steven Lewis (193-F) was the leading player in victory with 24
points and 6 rebounds.
Kibwe Trim (208-F/C-84, college:
Sacred Heart) also was great adding 18 points and 9 rebounds for his
team.

Carlos Arroyo and his teammates made 25-21 lead in the first ten
minutes and later jumped to comfortable 50-36 (HT). At that time it
seemed that Puerto Rico will take this one easily, but Trinidad and
Tobago players had other thoughts.
Steven Lewis was on fire and together with his teammates cut the
margin to ten pointes before the last quarter (23-27, Q3). They totally
took control on Puerto Rico in the last ten minutes of regular time
ending it with excellent 11-21 for 84-84 tie. In the overtime the hard
work and patience paid off for Trinidad and Tobago as they secured the
game with a basket by Joel Haywood and two free throws by
Ian Young with 24.1 seconds left. Trinidad and Tobago will have a
day off on Wednesday, while Puerto Rico will meet Mexico.

Group A
British Virgin Islands - U.S. Virgin
Islands

The British Virgins Islands had a great start in Santo Domingo. It was a
Day One of 2010 Centrobasket Championsip and British Virgin Islands were
too strong for U.S. Virgin Islands 59-50. Both teams are placed to
Preliminary Group A, together with Dominican Republic, Panama and
Jamaica.
Halstead Chiverton (193-G-82) shined for the winners in this meeting
with 23 points.
Kennedy Bass (196-F, college:
Anderson) followed him with 14 pts and 6 boards.
Steve Parillon
(196-F-78, college:
Henderson St.) helped with double-double of 11 points and 11
rebounds. In the loosing squad,
Walter Hodge (183-G-86, college:
Florida) collected 16 points and 6 rebs. He was the only ISV player
with double-digits in scoring. Teams were totally leveled at the
beginning and they finished first period with 14-14 tie.
Halstead Chiverton and his teammates improved in the next quarter
stopping ISV to just 10 points for ten minutes. On the other side, they
had 15 for 29-14 HT lead. After the breather, IVB continued in the same
rhythm and we can say that third quarter was the crucial one. IVB
players finished it with 20-12 for nice 13-point lead before the last
ten minutes. That last period belonged to ISV, but they needed a way
more in order to avoid loss in Day One of the Centrobasket championship.
In Day Two, the British Virgin Islands will meet Panama. The U.S. Virgin
Islands will have a day off.
Dominican Republic - Panama 63-56
The host of 2010 Centrobasket Championship had a joyful Day One in Santo
Domingo. Dominican Republic outplayed Panama 63-56 for 1-0 record in
Preliminary Group A. Beside the above mentioned teams, other
participants of the same pool are also Jamaica, British Virgins Islands
and U.S. Virgins Islands.

and he had 6 rebounds beside that.

Q1. They were in control in Q2 as well jumping to nice 25-34 at the half
time. However, that was all from Panama yesterday as Dominican Republic
was the team who dominated during the entire second half. The Dominicans
made 13-9 in third period and for the last ten minutes they smashed
Panama with 25-13. That was enough for the final score of 63-56 and the
first win in Santo Domingo. In Day Two, Dominican Republic will meet
Jamaica. Panama will play against British Virgins Islands.
Group B
Mexico - Cuba
62-82
Cuba cruised past Mexico in Day One of the 2010 Centrobasket
Championship in Santo Domingo. It means that Cuba now has 1-0 record in
Preliminary Group B, who beside these two teams also includes Belize,
Trinidad and Tobago and Puerto Rico.
Allens Jemont (195-G/F-80) stepped up for Cuba with 22 points. He
made 4 of 8 attempts from behind the arc.
Andy Bofill (192-G/F-82) scored 12, while
Joan Luis Haiti (200-C-82) (6 rebs) and
Orestes Torres (202-C-87) (6 rebs) netted 10 points each. In Mexico,
Gustavo Ayon (209-F/C-85, college:
San Jose St.) collected 16 points and 5 rebounds.

stopped on 15 pts. Cuba did a great job in the first half of this
meeting. The Cubans were on fire at the very beginning and they drained
29 points for just 10 minutes. On the other side, Mexicans stopped to 15
and were already down by 14 pts. Nothing has changed in the second
period, as Cuba still dominated and finished it 16-25. It means that
Cubans held comfortable 31-54 lead at the half time and the game winner
was already known. Mexico ended Q3 with 18-14, while the last one
belonged to Cuba 13-14 for the final 62-82 victory. Cuba will have a day
off on Tuesday. Mexico will meet Belize trying to grab the first win in
Santo Domingo.
Trinidad and Tobago - Belize
71-80
Belize shined in the opening day of 2010 Centrobasket in Santo Domingo.
The Belizeans managed to beat Trinidad and Tobago 71-80 for making the
first step forward to the Semifinals. Both teams are together with Cuba,
Mexico and Puerto Rico placed to Preliminary Group B.
Alex Carcamo (200-F-77, college:

Milton Palacio (190-G-78, college:
Colorado St.) were the leading scorers in victory with 16 pints
each. Carcamo also grabbed 8 rebounds beside that, while Palacio added 5
boards and 5 assists.
