Brazil - Argentina 73-75 Gabriel Deck (198-F-1995) brought Argentina to the FIBA AmeriCup trophy. He drained a two-point dagger with 16 seconds left on the clock to gift Argentina a 75-73 win. Moreover, he was named MVP of the tournament. Argentina started better and reached a 26-14 lead at the start. Brazil managed to win the rest of the quarters and Lucas Silva (208-C-1995) closed a 10-2 run after a three-pointer. USA Basketball didn't head home from AmeriCup empty-handed. Gary Clark (6'6''-SF-1994, college: Cincinnati, agency: Pensack Sports) scored 18 points, and the U.S. rallied in the final minutes to top Canada 84-80 in the bronze-medal game on Sunday. The Americans went on a 26-10 run over a 7-minute stretch of the final quarter, turning what was a 63-56 deficit into an 82-73 lead. 'I'm happy for our guys,' U.S. coach Alex Jensen said. 'It was an honor to be a part of it.' It was the ninth time in 11 appearances at AmeriCup - the championship of the FIBA Americas region - that the U.S. captured a medal. The Americans have won gold seven times, silver once and now have a bronze. Canada was seeking a seventh medal in 19 appearances at the event. Jodie Meeks - an NBA champion who spent 10 years in the league with seven teams - scored what may have been his final three points as a competitive player during that late run by the U.S. Meeks' only points on the day came when he got fouled on a 3-point try and made all three of the free throws with 3:31 left, pulling the U.S. into a 71-71 tie. Meeks is planning to retire and begin a coaching career. His teammates sent him out with a medal, and Clark's layup with 1:43 left put the Americans on top for good. 'It's definitely been an experience for our guys,' Clark said. 'The weather's nice. I think most guys were upset that they couldn't get in the ocean because of sharks ... but we've enjoyed our time here.' Abu Kigab (6'7''-F-1998, college: Boise St., agency: Green Sports Management) scored 18 points for Canada, while Kadre Gray (6'1''-G-1997, college: Laurentian) and Jahvon Henry-Blair (6'4''-G-1998, college: Georgetown) had 15 apiece. Zylan Cheatham (6'8''-F-1995, college: Arizona St.) scored 16 for the U.S., while Craig Sword (6'3''-SG-1994, college: MSU) added 11 and Norris Cole (6'2''-PG-1988, college: CSU) led the team with eight assists. Going home medalists, even though it wasn't a higher-profile event like the Olympics or World Cup, wasn't insignificant to the group of G League and internationally based players that the U.S. assembled for this trip. 'From Day 1, I felt it,' Jensen said. 'You're part of a special group.' Courtesy of: apnews.com AmeriCup 2022: Brazil edge Canada to enter the Final game - Sep 11, 2022

Team USA cruises past Panama en route to its first victory at the AmeriCup basketball tournament - Sep 6, 2022
The plan Alex Jensen laid out for the Team USA squad sent to the AmeriCup basketball tournament was simple. Get better every day, and let the results take care of themselves. It seems to be working. Norris Cole (6'2''-PG-1988, college: CSU), a former NBA guard who played for the Miami Heat, New Orleans Pelicans and Oklahoma City Thunder, scored 17 points, Craig Sword (6'3''-SG-1994, college: MSU) added 11 and the U.S. notched its first win of this year's AmeriCup by rolling past Panama 88-58 on Monday. The Americans (1-1) led by as many as 38 points, never trailed and outscored Panama 48-9 from 3-point range. "We've got to peak at the right time," Jensen, Team USA's coach, said. "I think we took a step in that direction tonight." The U.S. opened AmeriCup with a six-point loss to Mexico and has been rolling since. The Americans led Venezuela 48-21 at halftime Sunday before rain caused some leaks and forced the game to be stopped; that contest will resume Tuesday. Combine that score with Monday's effort, and the U.S. has outscored foes 136-79 in its last six quarters. "I thought we got better," Jensen said. Jeremy Pargo (6'2''-PG-1986, college: Gonzaga) -- a former NBA guard who played for the Memphis Grizzlies, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and Golden State Warriors after a standout college career at Gonzaga -- scored 10 points and Gary Clark had 11 rebounds for the U.S., which will have Wednesday off before a quarterfinal matchup against a to-be-determined opponent. "We're just focused on us and who we have to play," Cole said. "We're not looking ahead. We're taking it game by game. I take the scouting report game by game." Isaac Hall (5'11''-PG-2002) led Panama with 12 points. At 0-3, Panama was eliminated. Venezuela (2-0) defeated Mexico (2-1) on Monday, which opens the door for the U.S. to win a three-team tiebreaker and end this stage atop Group C. Mexico surprises US in AmeriCup basketball opener, 73-67 - Sep 3, 2022
Paul Stoll (5'11''-PG-1985) had 15 points and nine assists, and Mexico defeated the U.S. 73-67 on Friday in the opening game of Group C play for both teams at the FIBA AmeriCup. Fabian James added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Mexico. Jeremy Pargo (6'2''-PG-1986, college: Gonzaga) led the U.S. with 14 points. Norris Cole (6'2''-PG-1988, college: CSU) scored 11 and Gary Clark (6'6''-SF-1994, college: Cincinnati, agency: Pensack Sports) grabbed 12 rebounds for the Americans. Both teams shot 39%. But the U.S. committed 18 turnovers to Mexico's 13, and was whistled for 22 fouls to Mexico's 15. The loss doesn't knock the U.S. out of contention, though certainly puts the pressure on the Americans going into their final two games in group stage. There are 12 teams at AmeriCup, broken into three groups of four. The top two teams from each group are guaranteed berths in the quarterfinals, as well as two of the three third-place teams. That means the U.S. would still likely reach the quarterfinals with wins in its two remaining group games, and would even have a chance by going 1-1 in those contests. The U.S. is using a roster composed of players who were most recently on either G League teams or international clubs. The AmeriCup event is separate from the ongoing qualifying for next year's Basketball World Cup - which serves as a primary path for teams to earn a spot in the field for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
