EL SALVADOR - Brujos work witchcraft, snatch LMB crown - Jun 14, 2016
EL SALVADOR - Brujos work witchcraft, snatch LMB crown
Sunday in front of over 4,000 energetic spectators at the National Arena the regular season champions Santa Tecla Basketball Club (28-2) jumped out to a 34-16 first quarter thanks to 17 points from American forward William Overton (196-G/F-90) only to see that lead slip away basket by basket over the next three quarters and eventually lose the final and deciding game three of the Salvadoran Liga Mayor de Baloncesto (LMB) Opening Season championship series to the second seeded Brujos (Witches) de Izalco (26-4), 79-77.
The Brujos were paced once again by American point guard Jeremee Davis (191-PG-90, college: Georgia Coll.) who played the entire 40 minutes and went for 29 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in game three after dropping 49 points in game two the night before.
For his grand efforts Davis was an easy choice for LMB Finals MVP award. Davis finished the season ranked fifth in scoring at 29.8 points per game and number two in total points scored with 1,072 in 36 games.
The Brujos received big contributions as well from three other players who scored in double figures: American forward Tavarion Nix (201-G/F, college: Midwestern St.) who had 19 points and six rebounds with five assists; American center Travis Elliott (203-C-91, agency: Octagon Europe) with a double -double of 12 points and 13 rebounds; and Salvadoran shooting guard Ricardo Mendez (180-G-84) who added 12 points for the victors.
It was almost a carbon copy of game two in Izalco where the Brujos found themselves down eight at the half only to crawl back in the second half and pull out a 94-93 win to tie the best-of-three series a one all.
The Brujos were left for dead after getting blown out by 38 points in game one last Wednesday in Santa Tecla, 105-67. It seemed as if that story would repeat itself again on Sunday with Tecla taking an 18-point lead after just the first 10 minutes.
Davis was having none of that and after a slow start in the first half were he was held to eight points. He exploded for 21 points in the second half including the game winning floater with 13 second remaining on the clock. Davis finished 14 of 31 from the floor with all but one of his attempts coming from mid-range or in the paint.
It was the exact opposite for Santa Tecla's Overton who, after being red-hot in the first quarter - seven of nine field goals including three of four from three-point range totaling 17 points - cooled down drastically only managing to hit on six of his next 20 shot attempts - an extremely cold one of eight from beyond the arc - and scoring just 15 points combined in the following three quarters.
Overton had a shot at redemption after missing the potential game and championship winning shot the night before with the ball once again in his hands as the clock ticked down only to come up short on an NBA-range three from straight ahead at the buzzer that would have delivered the championship to Santa Tecla.
Santa Tecla also received double-double efforts from their pair of Salvadoran-Americans Robert Martinez (183-PG, college: Our Lady Lake), 17 points and 10 assists including two huge threes in the waning seconds, the last to tie the game at 77-77, and James Valladares (205-F/C-89, college: New Hampshire), 10 points and 10 rebounds.
In similarly agonizing fashion last season (Closing Season 2015) Santa Tecla lost in game three of the finals to FAS Denver on a missed lay-up at the buzzer after also wining the first game of the series only to lose the next two. Tecla also finished in first place of that regular season going 29-1.
The LMB of El Salvador, organized by the Salvadoran Basketball Federation (FESABAL), is in just its second year of operations and is the country's first truly national professional basketball league. It consists of 16 teams spread throughout the country stretching from border to border and representing nine of its 14 departments (states). Each team is required to field at least one foreigner with a maximum of three. The majority of the imports come from the United States, while others have come from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and South Africa. With 16 teams the LMB is the third largest professional league in all of the Americas only behind the 30-team NBA and the Argentine LNB LigaA with 20 teams. The LMB calendar consists of two 30-game seasons, the Opening Season and the Closing Season, played out over four months each. The top eight teams in each season qualify for the playoffs. The 2016 Closing Season tips off on August 13.
