Courtesy of Eurobasket LLC We bring you last week's top former Longhorns players who are currently playing in pro basketball.
#1. Ariel Atkins, a 5'10'' point guard who graduated from the University of Texas in 2018, played a crucial role in helping them win the WNBA Eastern Conference Champion title that year. She currently plays professionally in the WNBA, representing the Los Angeles Sparks. In a recent game against the Connecticut Sun, despite her outstanding performance, Atkins could not prevent the Sparks from narrowly losing 84-81 on the road. In the match, Atkins showcased her skills by scoring 16 points, grabbing 4 rebounds, and making 3 blocks, displaying her prowess on the court. Notably, she was flawless from the free-throw line, going 8-for-8 in 32 minutes of play. Although the Sparks were unable to secure the win, it is still early in the season, and there is room for improvement and turnaround. Throughout the current season, Atkins has been a consistent contributor, averaging 9.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.0 steals per game, ranking her as the fourth-best player in the league in terms of steals. Her performance against the Connecticut Sun highlighted her offensive and defensive capabilities, demonstrating her value as a key player for the Sparks.
#2. Sonya Morris, a 29-year-old, 5'10'' guard and Longhorns alumna from 2023, is currently playing professionally in the UPSHOT league. Recently, she showcased her talent by helping the Greensboro Groove secure a significant victory against the Jacksonville Waves with a score of 89-71. Despite only scoring 2 points in the 5 minutes she spent on the court, her contribution was crucial in the game that featured two top 4 ranked teams. The Greensboro Groove, with a somewhat modest record of 4-3 this season, relied on Morris to make a decisive impact. Her 2-point contribution against Jacksonville Waves not only secured the victory for her team but also propelled them to the champion title in the game, highlighting her ability to perform under pressure. Throughout this season, Morris has maintained an average of 0.7 points per game in the three games she has played so far, showcasing her consistency and dedication to her team's success.
