Christian
Santander
We had a one on one with CD Tinguiririca San Fernando's coach Cristian Santander . The argentinean had a good performance with the Womens National Team and now face this challenge, leading the project of CD Tinguiririca San Fernando a new team that joined Dimayor and in the first six rounds have been the surprise.

L: How can you evaluate your stint with the Women's National Teams ?

S: I think it was a successful process, with players from Arica to Punta Arenas, we consolidated a position for the chilean basketball, with results from third to fifth position, as it happened in the last 20 years. We had a lot of players well know in the continent and we earned respect from the other teams. We leave a register of over 100 players from all over the country, year by year, so the new head coach have a lot of information. We reached the Americas Cup for the first time in the chilean basketball (womens) and also qualified to a World Cup. We won a bronze medal and two silver medals. In my opinion it was a positive process

L: What can you say about the future of basketball in the country after so many problems with the federation and also with the leaders of Dimayor. What can be done to develop this sport in Chile ?

S
: The future of basketball in Chile is difficult, with two leagues for men and one national league for womens that last a month and a half it's gonna be hard to go forward. The first step would be to think in the interest of the sport and not in personal interests, unify leagues, train coaches, have strong institutions who can provide 100 spots for professional players and a league that last 10 months in mens basketball and a womens tournament of at least six months, but in this situation it's even harder to do it.

L: How is the change from working with National Teams (long term) to meet the responsabilities of a leagua, where you work thinking of two games a week ?

S: The coaches that work with National Teams want the adrenaline of games every week and the team coaches want to lead a project and a tournament every 5 or 6 months. I'm adapting to this new situation, it's not better, it's not worse, i'm just planning differently.

L: What is the level of the league at the start of the season ?

S: There's a huge difference betwenn the three teams with history in the league, they have been wotking together for many years, they have the infrastructure, they know the league, they know the import players. That's what the other five teams, including our team, are trying to figure out. Everything it's new, we're learning, beyond any positive results. The league level is acceptable.

L: How important is to have a player like Patrick Saez (193-G/F-79) in your roster ?

S: He's a natural leader, one of the few players in the country with a huge basketball IQ, a winner. The young players admire him and he is committed with the team. I give value to his desicion to join CD Tinguiririca San Fernando, leaving Liceo, a team with all the assets where he won everything. The young players admire him and he is committed with our project.

L: What are the expectations for CD Tinguiririca San Fernando in this first Dimayor Season ?

S: Reach the playoffs in a good shape and try to be the surprise. Those are our first year expectations.
